We have been learning so much and having a blast for the first month of school! Here are some things that we have been able to learn about-be sure to have your child tell you all of the fun things that we have been doing with all of these subjects!!

Reading:

We can recognize short and long vowel sounds! We also can read a selection and make predictions about what the author has been thinking! We can also retell a story with the events in order!

Writing:

We are in the beginning process of being able to write a letter as well as a narrative essay! We wrote fun letters to our buddy readers in fourth grade who are now going to be pen pals with our class! This past week we have also been working on being able to write a 5 sentence essay about true events that have happened to us with an introduction, transition words for the details, and a conclusion. So far, writing appears to be the class favorite for content we learn during the week! They are all making so many improvements as well as showing off all of the amazing writing skills that they already had!

Math:

We have different strategies to add and subtract numbers, including making a 10 and using a number line! Right now we are starting our place value unit and we are learning the importance of being able to tell the difference between the 1's, 10's, and 100's place! This is an extensive unit that will continue throughout the year and is an especially fun one to watch all of the progress that they children make-they are so smart!

Social Studies/Science:

We switch our focus between social students and science every two weeks! We started off the year with science and we practiced "being scientists" and conducting investigations. Recently, we have been finishing up our citizenship unit for social studies and have learned the importance of rules and consequences, both in a school and a nationwide setting. We also spent time talking about Patriots' Day and were able to have Mrs. Brown come and read us a story!

We are having a great year! Thanks for all that you do!!!!
