Our Second Month

October was such a fun month for us! We learned so many new things that will help us throughout the rest of the year!

Reading: We can now tell the difference between past, present, and future verbs! We also have been getting really great at thinking about how certain characters feel in the story. Be sure to ask your child to read to you so they can also show you the expression practice we have been doing in guided reading groups! One of our favorite class activities has been to get into groups and make posters that help us know more about each of our vocabulary words for the week! They have really enjoyed making these and have gotten really good at practicing presentations in front of the class!

Writing: We can now write informational papers using information sheets about different things! We wrote an essay all about penguins after reading some articles all on our own about them! We also can write a paper that gives instructions! We got to carve pumpkins and then write a paper on the steps to carve pumpkins! The kids really enjoyed this activity, especially because they got to try some of the pumpkin seeds the next day! We are getting really great at using transition words such as first, second, and third and can write an essay with an introduction sentence and a conclusion!!

Math: We just completed one of the hardest math units in second grade, and every student was able to complete the unit! We can now tell the difference between the hundreds, tens, and ones place! We also can explain how to turn hundreds into tens or into ones. We also made our own surveys and practiced giving them to each other in order to collect results and graph them. One of their favorite questions to ask was which Halloween candy is your favorite?

Social Studies/Science: We just started our health and saftey unit at the end of the month! We talked about ways to be safe at school and how to deal with bullies. We also talked about safe ways to go trick or treating!

We are having so much fun learning here at Spanish Oaks!
